What is

How it Works

Natural gas is a clean, reliable, and competitively priced fuel source. In the Philippines, it is extracted directly from the Malampaya gas field in the West Philippine Sea. The gas is then transmitted through a subsea pipeline to Batangas, where our plants use it to generate the electricity that powers our homes and businesses.

With natural gas, there’s no reason to use dirty energy. Natural gas emits approximately 60% less carbon dioxide than coal. It also releases less nitrogen and sulfur oxides into the atmosphere. The electricity it generates does not create harmful byproducts like ash, sludge, and particulate matter. This way, natural gas generates electricity that is cleaner for the environment and for the air that we breathe!

Aside from being clean, natural gas adapts better to the fluctuating energy and other events that can lead to blackouts. It’s also competitively priced with little to no impact on your electricity bill.

First Gen was established in 1998, but has pioneered the use of natural gas through First Philippine Holdings Corporation since 1993. It now has four natural gas-fired power plants located in the First Gen Clean Energy Complex in Batangas City. In 2016, these plants combined generated 16% of Luzon’s needs!

The Santa Rita and the San Lorenzo power plants helped pave the way for the birth of the natural gas industry in the Philippines, and continue to be reliable sources of electricity even after 20 years.

In 2016, First Gen inaugurated two state-of-the-art plants: the Avion and the San Gabriel power plants. The Avion is the first natural gas plant in the Philippines to use aero-derivative gas turbines, allowing it to quickly adjust to the needs of the grid. The San Gabriel power plant is the most efficient natural gas-fired plant in Southeast Asia with approximately 60% efficiency at ISO conditions. It maximizes the use of gas, which lessens its environmental impact.

First Gen: A Natural Gas Pioneer

Powering Progress with Innovation

Today, First Gen continues to pursue the development of natural gas, so the country can reap the benefits of this clean, affordable, and flexible energy source.

As the economy and the population of the Philippines continue to grow, the demand for energy increases. But because of climate change, we should look to cleaner energy sources as a solution. Natural gas can generate the electricity we need with significantly less impact to the environment.

It is also the fuel of choice for energy security. The state-of-the-art natural gas plants operate with more flexibility, meaning quicker responses to sudden changes in power demand. This allows them to complement the intermittency of some renewable energy sources when these sources turn off due to factors such as high cloud cover or low wind speed.

With the support of natural gas, the Philippines can maximize its use of renewable energy, fueling an even brighter future by providing the grid with the stability it needs during this transition.
